Well we have all played baseball in some pretty windy conditions but this was the first game I have ever played where the players had to not wear their caps, it was that windy.
Our first home game of the season and it was against the old foe. Essendon. Seeing this is our first season, we have to pick some one to be our arch rival so it might as well be them.
It was good to see Ravneel come down and watch for a while and Alan as well. Thanks for the support. In the canteen, we had Mr and Mrs Clarke, awesome job and helps for helping out today.
For his first official game as an umpire, Stu White was behind the dish and he did a great job. Brucey did the line and everyone on the team really appreciate the effort you guys put in.
It was a great game. Final score was 12 to 9 but it sounds closer than it was.
I took the mound to start the game as I thought I would be able to handle the wind a bit better than most and did a pretty good job. After 4 innings, 7 hits, 5 k’s, no walks, 5 runs with 1 earnt. Threw 46 strikes and 9 balls. Pretty happy with that especially after last week where I could only manage to throw 9 pitches before the arm was too sore. Maurice came on in relief and continues to show that he is developing well as a pitcher. 2 innings, 3 hits, 1 k, 2 walks, 4 runs, 2 earnt, 32 strikes and 24 balls.
Hitting wise, I am excited about the people we have. With Will Needham, Nathan Dalty and Maurice Sacco our first 3, that is a really strong top order and today proved it with these 3 guys scoring 7 times between them. Neil Ray does what a Donk does and continues to hit the ball hard, Gavin was dropped one spot this week and had a blinder hitting 2 doubles for he’s best hitting game I have seen. Everyone continues to battle each at bat and that is all I can ask for. Try not to be an easy out and do a minimum job, advance base-runners, put the pressure on the pitcher to throw good pitches, put the ball in play and make the fielders get you out. Running wise, we had 18 steals today. This created pressure on the fielding team and through that we created at least 6 runs that we may not have scored otherwise. Excellent job.
Training is the key if we want to continue to improve. See you all Thursday.
